Profile Leveling (Longitudinal leveling)

To know the nature of the ground surface the profile leveling is done along the center of the road at some regular intervals (say 20m, 30 m, etc.) If required, staff readings may also be taken at points of importance where the slope of the ground suddenly changes. Procedure: Suppose AB, BC, CD, and DE are the directions of the center of the road. Technical Data used in the field explained in civil surveyor course in rawalpindi. The leveling instrument is placed at suitable positions (say L1, L1, L1,..} , after temporary adjustments, the staff readings are taken The first staff reading of any set up is entered in the BS column, and the last in the FS column. The other readings are entered in the IS column.
Therefore bearing and back bearing of each line should be measured and entered in the level book. Temporary bench-marks should be placed at some change intervals (say o 1,000 m) on the roots of trees or some permanent points. At the end of the day’s work , a temporary bench-mark must be placed at suitable point. Fly leveling (check leveling) should be done to connect this BM to the starting point of the day’s work. Cross-sectional Leveling
While profile leveling is in progress, cross-sectional leveling should also be done. The cross-sections are taken perpendicular to the center line of the alignment at some regular intervals (say20 m, 40, etc.) The purpose of cross-sectional leveling is to know the undulation of the ground surface transverse to the center of the road. The length of cross section depends upon the nature of the work. In case of ordinary work, the length may be 20 or 40 m on each side of the center line. The levels are taken at an interval of 5m on each side. Additional may be taken if the nature of the ground surface suddenly changes.
